Giza Plateau After Dark — History Comes Alive

About this tour

Watch the pyramids and Sphinx come alive at night as a spectacular light show narrates 5,000 years of history across the Giza Plateau.

What you'll see

The Sound and Light Show at the Giza Pyramids has been running since 1961, making it one of the longest-running shows of its kind. As darkness falls, colored lighting and projections play across the Great Pyramid of Khufu, the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx, while a recorded narration, traditionally voiced as the Sphinx itself, tells the story of the pharaohs who built them. You watch from outdoor seating facing the Sphinx on the edge of the plateau. It is an atmospheric way to see the monuments after the crowds have left, and it complements a daytime visit rather than replacing it.

How the evening runs

We arrange your transfer to the Giza Plateau and back, timed to the show you choose. The show itself lasts about an hour, and the total evening, including the drive from a Giza hotel, is about an hour and a half; from central Cairo, allow extra time for traffic. Arrive a little early to collect tickets and settle into your seat. Shows run in several languages on different nights and at different times, so we check which performances are scheduled in English on your chosen date and plan your pickup around them.

Good to know

Entry tickets to the show are not included and are purchased separately. Evenings in the desert cool down quickly, particularly from November to March, so bring a sweater or jacket. The show is suitable for all ages, although very young children may find the narration slow. Photography is generally allowed, but flash will not help at this distance, so use your phone's night mode. Shows can occasionally be canceled due to bad weather or special events, in which case we will let you know as early as possible and help you choose another night.

Pairing the show with a daytime visit

The show is most rewarding once you have walked around the monuments in daylight, because the narration refers to the kings, temples and stories you will already recognize. A practical plan is to take our Giza Pyramids day tour, rest at your hotel in the afternoon, and return to the plateau for the evening performance. If your time in Cairo is short, the show also works on its own as a gentle introduction to Giza. Either way, booking a few days ahead gives us time to match your transfer with an English-language performance on your chosen date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are tickets to the show included?

No. The price covers your transfer to the Giza Plateau only. Show entry tickets are excluded and are purchased separately. Ticket prices are set by the show's operator and can change, so we confirm the current price and help with arrangements when you book.

Is the show available in English?

Yes, but not at every showing. The show rotates through several languages on different evenings and time slots. When you book, we check the schedule for your dates and arrange your transfer for an English performance.

How much does the transfer cost?

The transfer is $30 total for one person and $50 total for two. For groups of three or more, it is $20 per person. Show tickets are additional and are not part of this price, so budget for them separately when planning your evening.

Can I combine the show with dinner?

Yes. Many guests pair it with our Dinner with Pyramids View experience, since both take place in Giza in the evening. Each is booked separately, and we can help with timing so dinner fits before or after the show you choose.
